As an ongoing supporter of Risk Hub and the broader adviser community, MLC Life Insurance once again stepped up at this year’s Riskinfocus tour – with a timely and thought-provoking session led by Marshall Ross, Partner Education Manager.
In his session, “Demographical Differentiation: Risk Advice in the Changing Australian Landscape”, Marshall tackled the shifting makeup of Australia’s population and the unique risks and opportunities this creates for advisers.
“Many advisers are already feeling the effects of generational change – especially with clients in or nearing retirement,” Marshall explained. “But what we’ve focused on is how these demographic shifts can be used to reframe the value of advice. It’s not just about protecting income anymore – it’s about protecting lifestyle, retirement plans, and intergenerational goals. That changes the conversation.”
The Australian retirement system via superannuation has shifted to one of individual responsibility, and with longer life expectancy, higher costs, and adult children who are financially dependent for longer, the coming generation of retirees has to navigate this minefield.
Marshall also highlighted that retirement risks don’t just impact clients – they can affect advice businesses too. “We looked at how claims events can erode not only retirement capital but also business revenue and client value, unless advisers are actively planning and positioning their advice.”
If you missed the session on the tour, a webinar version is now available on-demand via MLC’s Education Hub – and you can also register for upcoming CPD-accredited webinars that continue to explore this space.
